Same well, different story.

“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.  The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.   And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”  The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.  Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”  Romans 8:14-17

Seeing a well in Haiti, whether in a school yard, in an urban setting or out in the middle of nowhere in the mountains; it is a Spiritual moment.  Seeing a person at the well and the same question usually arises; are these people or this single person saved?  Do they know the Son of God?

The young woman at the well in the school yard in Cap Haitian in the attached photo has surely heard of Jesus Christ as the pastors there share their water with the neighborhood and also the news of our risen Savior with those who come for water.

I heard a song recently about the woman at the well in the 4th Chapter of John.  This woman at Cap Haitian and the words of this simple song seem to resonate a simple truth at every well in Haiti that I have ever seen and also holds true for each of us.

“Jesus’ feet were growing weary as he journeyed on His way.  So He rested at a well side; a comfort in the heat of day.  There He waited for a woman, black with sin and bound for hell.  When she arrived, He plainly told her, “what you need is not in the well.  He’s still waiting by the well and He’s holding out His hand.  If you’ll drink this living water you won’t have to thirst again.  He’s been waiting by the well side knowing you’d be passing by so take advantage of the moment; He’s not gone, He’s still waiting by the well.  Are you tired of being thirsty even though you’ve had your fill of the water that the world gives?  Does it leave you longing still?  Well, there’s good news up at the well side.  A woman’s voice rings loud and clear, she says this man changed her forever.  And if you need hope, you can find it here!”

The children attending this school have heard the Good News and are sharing the news of living water with those along their journey back into their neighborhoods, who are still listening to the lies of this world; the lies of the vodou priest.  Thank you for preparing them for their journey by supporting their school feeding program.

Seek and save the lost.

“Now he had to go through Samaria.  So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.  Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.  When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?”  (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)  The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?”  (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)  Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” John 4:4-10

Our purpose throughout our life’s journey as Christians, should be to seek and save the lost; wins souls for Christ.  That can be difficult if we are picking and choosing who we are seeking.  We can instruct our children to stop living sinful lives and start being more like us; Christians.  Before you go and preach to your children about anything; check your closet.  We can sit in Church meetings and get a list of names of members who have been delinquent for a number of years and divide up the names and make telephone calls and ask “where have you been?”  Or, our Church can hire staff to train volunteers who will seek and save the lost.

Jesus created the model of our work with the Samaritan woman that He met at the well.  This woman appeared at a well just outside of the town in which she lived.  Jesus knew who she was; how she had been living her life; He even knew she was currently living with a man to whom she was not married.  He could have really unloaded on her; after all, He was the Son of God.  Rather than seize the opportunity to use what He believed to condemn this woman for how she was living, Jesus shows us that offering hope to the lost is the better choice.  Whenever I see a photo of people around a well in Haiti this story comes to mind. 

These two girls by the well at Eglise Lutherienne in Cap Haitian probably come from homes where vodou is practiced and a neighborhood with souls that need to be saved.  The water in this well in Cap Haitian is free for them and this gift, while not the living water Christ has to offer, is a gift of life for their thirsty lives.  They are not drinking out of the ditch; they are drinking on territory that is dedicated to Jesus Christ.

The school is filled with young missionaries that you have helped to prepare as they are blessed with a Trinity HOPE feeding program and daily are given the Word of God that makes its way into the neighborhoods of Cap Haitian.  You and I didn’t choose to feed these kids, God did.  HE chose us.  It wasn’t our plan reach out to these two children by the well; it was His plan to use the children in the school to do that.  He chose you to help; you had a choice.  Thank you.

Heal me.

“A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”  Jesus was indignant.  He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!”  Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.  Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: “See that you don’t tell this to anyone.  But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”  Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news.  As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places.  Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.” Mark 1:40-45

The healed leper was truly full of joy and could not keep quiet about ‘his’ miracle.  How would you have responded to being healed from an incurable disease?  Had your illness been healed by Jesus and then you had been told not to tell anybody but it would be okay to show yourself without the scars of your illness to your Pastor; what would you have done?  I can only imagine that it would have been very difficult to contain my joy.

One dictionary provides the following definitions for the word ‘heal’.  1. To restore to health or soundness; cure.  2. To set right; repair: healed the rift between us.  3. To restore a person to spiritual wholeness.  4.  To become whole and sound; return to health.

To me it seems that each of these definitions would cause one’s eyes to brighten and bring a wide smile to stretch across a face; healing brings joy to the one being healed and also to those who may have had a part in the healing process.  Consider the children in the attached photo, they attend the one of two Christian schools in Ouanaminthe that have a Trinity HOPE feeding program; they are being healed.  Their relationship with our Triune God is either being formed or restored and their physical hunger is being restored every day.

I heard a quote on BOTT radio recently when an Evangelist said “We cannot make people love us, but we can let others love us.”  As a Trinity HOPE supporter, I have no intentions to ‘make’ these children love me, but rather I smile knowing their spiritual welfare ability is being strengthened each day as they draw closer to God and farther away from the vodou priest.  When I visit them, they can hug me all they want but all the glory belongs to God as He is the reason for their healing and also for my healing.  I close today with the words from a song that I heard on the internet written by Lenny Smith called ‘Our God reigns.’

“How lovely on the mountains are the feet of Him who brings good news, good news; announcing peace, proclaiming news of happiness: our God reigns, our God reigns!  He had no stately form; He had no majesty that we should be drawn to Him.  He was despised and we took no account of Him.  Our God reigns, our God reigns!  It was our sin and guilt that bruised and wounded Him.  It was our sin that brought Him down.  When we like sheep had gone astray our Shepherd came and on His shoulders bore our shame.  Meek as a lamb that’s led out to the slaughterhouse, dumb as a sheep before its shearer, His life ran down upon the ground like pouring rain that we might be born again.  Out from the tomb He came with grace and majesty; He is alive, He is alive.  God loves us so, see here His hands, His feet, His side; yes we know, He is alive.”

Stay awake!

(Jesus said) "Therefore stay awake; for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning; lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake." Mark 13:35-37

These verses in Mark give each of us a reminder to STAY AWAKE!  When I read these verses today, I was thinking that perhaps Jesus was telling me to stay busy, stay awake as the master may return at any time; nobody on this side of Heaven knows when, but He has promised to return.

Do you suppose that we are to just be staying idle and watching and waiting for the Master to return?  It wouldn’t seem that is what Jesus would be asking us to do, considering the Great Commission in the final chapter of Matthew.  It would seem that we are to be working to bring more souls into the Kingdom and protect those that are already in His fold; protect the property and bring in more as the harvest is ready.  Be alert, don’t close your eyes and go to sleep, no…stay alert and watch for the Master.  The children in the attached photo appear to be waiting…and watching. 

Waiting and watching for their turn to receive their lunch at Petit Paradis in Port-au-Prince.  They belong to the King and have been told about the Master’s return.  The temptations and pressures of their world, and our world attack each of us every day; temptations that try to lure us into falling asleep, stop working and stop believing.

We need to stand ready to receive our Master at each hour of the day, waiting and watching for that glorious day when the door will open.  Thank you for staying awake and helping to prepare these children to be ready for that day when each of us will meet our Savior face to face and be taken from this sinful world in a new Heavenly home.

You will be tested.

“Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.  But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.”  1 Peter 4:12-13

The attached photo was taken from Google Earth and it is a section of National Highway Rte. 1, about one and a half miles east of Gonaives.  This location will forever be a reminder to me of the above scripture.  I have been through this location on many occasions, driving alone and driving with others but always with Him.

Before I tell you about this ‘test’, I would like to share with you that when I say ‘the other day’, I could be referring to any time between yesterday and five years ago.  And when I say ‘back in the day’ that can be anywhere from five years to five decades ago.  If you walk in my sandals for a while, you might more fully understand my reasoning.

Back in the day; there were four of us riding in my Mitsubishi truck, up and over the mountain from Cap Haitian to PAP in the heat of an early afternoon; Pastors Daniel Paul, Eliona Bernard, my driver Joey and me.  We had stopped in Gonaives to get fuel for the pickup and had learned that a Haitian Senator from this area had been assassinated that same day in PAP and there were some serious problems brewing in Gonaives.  We decided to leave immediately and not stop to visit Pastor Revenel Benoit before leaving.

We reached the location in the photo and the road was “broken”; a term used by Haitians to describe the road being blockaded by something.  On this day two semi-trucks were parked in such a manner as to straddle the highway from ditch to ditch making the road impassable.  We stopped and a group of armed men wearing plaid shirts and blue jeans motioned for us to get out of the truck and stand still.  Prayer time for me that was followed by words drifting in my mind from a Kris Kristofferson song.  “Why me Lord, what have I ever done to deserve even one of the pleasures I've known.  Tell me Lord, what did I ever do that was worth love from you or the kindness you've shown.”

The four of us got out of the truck and placed our hands into the air as their Haitian arsenal of outdated and unclean weapons were pointed at us.  The man who approached me was carrying an old 410 shotgun that he was obviously very proud of as he broadly smiled while he placed it’s barrel a few inches from my face.  I uttered the words ‘mwen pa gen lanjan’ and ‘missionary’ and pointed to the cross on my Christ Lutheran Church ball cap on my head.  I asked if he was a Christian and knew about and believed Jesus Christ; he nodded that he KNEW Jesus.  “Lord help me Jesus, I've wasted it so help me Jesus, I know what I am.  Now that I know that I've needed you so help me Jesus, my soul's in your hand.”

They wanted money (lanjan), or drugs or weapons and sadly we didn’t have any of these items.  We had Jesus and that was a problem for them, as they were sure that we had the treasures of their world somewhere in my white truck.  We walked away from the truck as they searched the interior, and in the bed and gave up as another vehicle came down the road and they went through the same routine with them.

Our journey was delayed by an hour, waiting as they marched back and forth, shouting and pointing their guns.  “Tell me Lord, if you think there's a way, I can try to repay all I've taken from you.  Maybe Lord, I can show someone else what I've been through myself on my way back to you.”

I have shared this story with a number of people but never did with my mother.  Many asked what was going through my mind while staring down the barrel of the shotgun.  I recall being calm and at peace; seems odd but at the time, that is what was occupying my thoughts; wondering if any of these people knew Jesus.  “Lord help me Jesus, I've wasted it so help me Jesus, I know what I am.  Now that I know that I've need you so help me Jesus, my soul's in your hands.”

When mission teams travel to Haiti to visit Trinity HOPE feeding programs, please keep the team members and Haitians with them in your daily prayers as one never knows what will be around the next bend or just down the road.  It is always comforting to know that people like you are praying for each of us as we visit schools in Haiti.

Be courageous.

“I waited patiently for the Lord; He turned to me and heard my cry.  He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.” Psalm 40:1–2

We live in times where there are more and more challenges on this side of Heaven and they test our courage to it’s seemingly fullest measure.  We’re not alone; ever.  There are times when our challenges in this fallen world seem too big, too fierce, too horrible and in our despair, we forget that we are not alone.  Our Savior has faced all that the evil foe had to throw upon Him and Jesus has won that battle for us and is with us as we face life’s next challenge.

Heavenly Father, we come before you today and pray that You would bring us relief when we are swamped with the bad tasting wave of despair and discouragement.  Grant deliverance for us who are caught in that awful smelly swamp and start to slide into its dark, gooey filled waters.  Encourage our hearts as we face those depressing, dark moments that leave us feeling hopeless and believing the lie that things will never change.  Father, give us hope beyond the heartbreaks we experience.  In humbleness, Father, we call upon You as Your children. We ask You to lift our spirits by transforming our minds.  Strengthen us to see the value of dwelling on things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report.  Help us to set our minds on heavenly things rather than on those earthly things that continually drag us down.  Give us a rallying focal point around Your grace, dear Lord.  We need that point of focus, given our times in this pandemic, and uncertainty, being as they are, and our moods so given to change.  Thank You that Your Son loves us and keeps on loving us no matter where we’ve strayed or what we have done.  Thank You that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.  Lord, we also pray for those lost souls next door, in Haiti and throughout this world, who have never met Your Son as Savior.  We ask that their burden of discouragement would be lifted by the realization that Jesus's death on the cross paid the complete price for their sins.  Help them see past their pain to the reality that there is nothing they need to do, can do or promise or change or give up in order to be accepted by You.  Help them to trust in Your Son.  May they do so today.

In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Remember me.

“And he said, "Jesus, remember me when You come into Your Kingdom."  And He said to him, "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in paradise."  Luke 23:42-43

There were many times while I was living in Haiti that these verses from Luke came to mind; recalling the words of the thief that was hanging on the cross next to the Son of God, asking Christ Jesus to remember him when He gets into Heaven.  The attached photo was one of those times.  It was taken on the roof of the school at Village de la Paix which is next door to the Cite Solei slum in Port-au-Prince; especially dangerous part of the capitol.  Just beyond the range of this photo was a barricade placed there by a group of vodou people charging a fee to drive through ‘their’ territory, as they would say “you are obliged to give me $10 to drive through this street.”  This fee would be used for road repairs, as form of local taxation; common in Haiti.  Or, the fee might be used for a bottle of Haitian Rhum.  I drove around their barricade while making the sign of the cross and tipped my Christ Lutheran Church ball cap to them.

There are more vodou people in Haiti than Christians and quite often I would wonder what their remark would have been to our Savior had they been hanging next to him on Calvary.  Many of the children in our schools with Trinity HOPE feeding programs come from homes with family members who still practice vodou and the children must be questioned by those who have not heard the truth about Jesus.  Their journey on this earth has to be difficult as they give an answer for the truth that they have been taught in their Christian schools.

Our Savior has assured them that they will be with Him in Paradise along with all who accept Him as their Lord and Savior.  “Just do whatever HE tells you.”  If Jesus promises that He has a mansion prepared for you in Heaven, its already there!  Thank you for continuing to support these young children who carry that message to the lost souls in Haiti.

Revenge!

“Do not repay anyone evil for evil.  Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.  If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.  Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.  On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.  In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”  Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”  Romans 12:17-20

Revenge!  Been wronged by anyone recently or have you been on the other end of a bad situation where you are tempted to enact revenge?  Our Savior instructs us to just suck it up and realize that it is satan causing the problems.  Don’t seek revenge, be nice to them.  It was our Savior who turned the other cheek.

While reading this scripture from Romans 12 the song “love lifted me” came on the computer radio.  If you didn’t know by now, I am a Southern Gospel junkie; when you get to Heaven and can’t find me by the soft serve ice cream machine…head over to the Southern Gospel arena and I will either be singing or sitting and tapping my toe.  The words from this song give a nice response to the Apostle Paul’s words on revenge.

“I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore, very deeply stained within, sinking to rise no more, but the Master of the sea, heard my despairing cry, from the waters lifted me, now safe am I.  Love lifted me! Love lifted me!  When nothing else could help love lifted me!  All my heart to Him I give, ever to Him I'll cling in His blessed presence live, ever His praises sing, love so mighty and so true, merits my soul's best songs, faithful, loving service too, to Him belongs.   Love lifted me! Love lifted me!  When nothing else could help love lifted me!  Souls in danger look above, Jesus completely saves, He will lift you by His love, out of the angry waves.  He's the Master of the sea, billows His will obey, He your Savior wants to be, be saved today.  Love lifted me! Love lifted me!  When nothing else could help love lifted me!”

Sometimes it is hard to think about being lifted by love, His love, but it happens every day throughout our lives.  It is happening now in the life of the child attending Mammou Lutheran School in Port-au-Prince in the attached photo.  Consider the last verse that Paul wrote above ‘Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good’ and know that while she is a sinner, she is not evil.  Satan and the vodou priest don’t want her in school and don’t want you to even consider helping to educate or feed this one small child; that is evil and this world has plenty of that kind of thinking to go around.

Thank you for resisting satan and this world’s directions.  Thank for you supporting this child, this school and the other 42,500 children attending Schools in Haiti with a Trinity HOPE feeding program.

HE is here!

“Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.  Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.  Live in harmony with one another.  Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.  Do not be conceited.”  Romans 12:14-16

Much of this text that was written by the Apostle Paul, goes against the grain of our world today; bless those who persecute me and bless, don’t curse?  Have you watched the television, read the newspaper, internet or sat socially distanced in a public gathering recently? 

As Christians living in North America, we have our struggles listening to politicians giving advice during this pandemic and the children attending the Lutheran school in Mammou have their struggles with simple things like having to listening to the vodou priest down the street sacrificing animals at night and saying Jesus is dead, buried and is dust in a tomb.  There is a song ‘He is Here’ by a Gospel group called the Talley’s that I heard recently and it reminds me that God is in fact here and in Haiti and is calling out to each of us.

“He is here! Hallalujah! He is here! Amen!  He is here, holy, holy, I will bless His name again; He is here, listen closely; Hear Him calling out your name; He is here, you can touch Him; You will never be the same!  I sense an awesome moving of the Holy Spirit; I see His countenance resting on your face; I know that there are angels hov'ring all around us, for the presence of the Lord is in this place.  He is here! Hallalujah! He is here! Amen!  He is here, holy, holy, I will bless His name again; He is here, listen closely; Hear Him calling out your name; He is here, you can touch Him; You will never be the same!  I searched for peace among the shadows dark and lonely, gave up on finding that strong and lasting love; I tasted all the things that sin could think to offer me, but today, I feast on manna from above.  He is here! Hallalujah! He is here! Amen!  He is here, holy, holy, I will bless His name again; He is here, listen closely; Hear Him calling out your name; He is here, you can touch Him; You will never be the same!”

Rejoice with the children at Mammou, knowing that our Triune God sent His only Son Jesus Christ to rescue us from the lawlessness, confusion and sinfulness of this world.  He is here, with us every day and the ‘high and mighty’ of this world cannot separate us from our Savior.

Do what HE tells you.

“When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?”  He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.  Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”  Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”  Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.”  There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there).  Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.”  John 6:5-11

Was there ever a time in your life when your parents told you to do something and you just knew, that was not something you were going to do because there was NO way that was going to work?  I know that it happened to me…can’t count the times on both hands that happened to me.  There are times, when good advice or directions are hard to follow or believe. 

Remember the wedding at Cana when the host had run out of the good wine and Mary told Jesus to do something?  Jesus replied that it wasn’t His time but went ahead with her request and the servants must have thought that this son of a carpenter was a lunatic.  But we read in John 2:5; “His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever HE tells you.”  Jesus’ mom tells the servants to just ‘do whatever HE tells you’.

Now we read in John 6 about the feeding of the five thousand and the disciples telling Jesus why they can’t feed this many people and here is the boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish…”do whatever HE tells you”.  I like that the NIV has the words ‘small’ to describe the size of the bread and fish as if big loaves and big fish would have lessened the effect of the miracle.  Jesus gave thanks, blessed the food and fed the five thousand men and scholars surmise the number was closer to fifteen thousand hungry people with women and children included.  Just do whatever HE tells you.

Trinity HOPE has been searching for more schools to feed in Haiti for some time and a month ago Keith Logan learned there may be more Christian schools on the Island of Gonave; surely not, never heard that before.  Keith gets a nudge, goes to Gonave and Trinity HOPE will start feeding 8 new schools in September.  Just do whatever HE tells you.  IF you have a quarter in your pocket that isn’t really worth much and is heading for the change jar on your dresser, stop and look at the attached photo.  Your quarter can provide a meal for this hungry Haitian school child.  Please, just do whatever HE tells you.

Heavenly Father, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown.  Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.  Amen.
